The growing foundation – bio-based adaptation of existing foundations for new buildings

The sub-project A04 explores sustainable reinforcement of existing foundations via biocementation, i.e. improving soil through calcium carbonate precipitation induced by bacterial activity (MICP). It aims to understand, describe, and optimize these processes using a multiscale approach in experiments and numerical modelling. This includes biochemical processes at the microscale, bacterial and nutrient injection at the mesoscale, and foundation rein-forcement at the macroscale. Additionally, the project focuses on reducing costs and greenhouse gas emissions by investigating the use of naturally occurring urea from wastewater and wastewater-based denitrification in the MICP process.
